Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 1

After the events of “I Am My Mom”, Aquamarine marvels at the self-absorption of “The Rose Quartz”, who is actually Steven. He shouts his convictions and “love” to break the Diamonds, but Aquamarine reveals that the Diamonds have something much worse in store for Steven, not caring about the safety of his peers on Earth. Topaz reveals that Lars is still aboard the ship, leading Steven to want to break the deal they had made to no avail, instead being taunted by Aquamarine. He leaves, leaving the Topaz to team up and control Steven and Lars. She returns to inform Topaz of her current plans, then asks Steven what he looks like, only to be told, “terrible, small, and evil.” He takes this with humor and rhetorically asks if this is how “Rose” flattered so many gems into joining the Rebellion. He leaves again, trusting Topaz with piloting the ship despite their “additions”.

Lars blames his current situation on Steven, who is already aware and also did not get the expected result. Steven asked where Lars was when everyone else ran off the ship. Lars says he hid as “any sane person would” only to realize that his current situation was entirely his fault. He recalls his cowardice in these situations and how it affected Sadie, especially when he ran away from the Cool Kids party in “The Good Lars”. Steven thought Lars was kidnapped before he was told the correct chronology. Steven tries to come up with a plan to get Lars back to Earth by trying to get Topaz’s attention by comparing Steven’s worth to Lars, who sarcastically thanks Steven when Steven clarifies his choice of word. The two begin to notice Topaz’s “inattentiveness” and Steven starts yelling. Lars tells him it’s just because he has “those big headphones” on.

The ship begins to malfunction, and Aquamarine concludes that the crystalline gems on the engine during takeoff did it. He orders Topaz to fix it and Topaz goes down to the control room on the lower level. Steven tells Lars to look for something that can help them because Lars is too stressed to do anything. Steven notices the gem destabilizer and asks Lars to follow his plan, asking him to remove Steven’s pants. Lars is reluctant and makes excuses to avoid the idea, only to get Steven to yell at Lars to do it. He then asks Lars to tie his pants in a lasso, which he can’t, as he falls to the floor due to Lars’ continued willful ineptitude. Steven asks him to pick them up and lassos the destabilizer. Lars half-swings the lasso and gives up – infuriating Steven, who tells him to throw the lasso. Lars literally throws the lasso out of range, infuriating Steven.

Lars asks Steven why he thinks he is able to help him and successfully do these tasks, classifying himself as a “wuss” who unlike Steven is easily scared. Steven disagrees because he’s scared of the situation right now since he couldn’t save everyone by coming forward, mentioning how the Diamonds will end up destroying Earth and his false beliefs, and says he doesn’t know how he can save Lars from the current situation. Lars looks on the bright side, which pleases Steven and he wants to find a way. Steven tells Lars that he doesn’t need to overdo the situation, making Lars realize that the situation is messed up and that Steven wants to oppose his goal by not being alone. They want to hug, but they don’t have the appropriate limbs.

The sentiment shared from being together causes Topaz to become herself for the same reason, adding how her stoic demeanor towards missions masks her true feelings. Topaz offers to help her get Steven and Lars off the ship and approaches the escape pod. Aquamarine comes down, impatient with the wait, and witnesses Topaz’s defiance. They destroy the escape pod and Steven tries to convince Aquamarine to confess “his feelings” as well, leading Aquamarine to wonder if Steven is joking or not.

He continues to use his wand against Topaz, but he grabs the destabilizer and pins Aquamarine to the control screen. Aquamarine asks Topaz what she will do next and how the Diamonds will feel about it, threatening to have Topaz separated and broken. Topaz rolls over, regretting every action. Aquamarine tells her to disconnect and comply so it never has to be talked about again. The group leaves the ship and Steven again tries to convince Topaz not to answer. The Topazes go in separate directions, leading Steven and Lars apart.
