Steven Universe Season 5 Episode 22

“Made of Honor” is the 22nd episode of the fifth season of Steven Universe, the 150th episode overall, and the fourth episode in the seventh StevenBomb.

Official synopsis

Steven has a big surprise for the Crystal Gems.[2]

Conspiracy

Steven presents Ruby and Sapphire with a book of wedding options. They want invitations with flames and dolphins. Later, the Crystal Gems are excitedly creating invitations until Peridot laments the work and asks how many they made. Amethyst counts to ten and Sapphire reacts sadly. As Steven explains their schedule, Sapphire explains that the root of her sadness is that the rest of the Crystal Gems have been damaged and bubbled up, so she can’t attend.

While preparing the place markers, Steven looks at the names before grabbing a new card and writing Bismuth’s. She goes to Bismuth’s gem and bubbles it, releasing her. He greets her shakily. She responds by asking why he would release her, and Steven tries to uncover the truth, but not before Bismuth sees all the bubbled gems, some of which he knows, and assumes that Rose just imprisoned anyone who disagreed with her. She tries to free the gem she refers to as “Biggs”, not realizing that it was the victim of a corruption attack at the end of the gem rebellion. Once Bismuth realizes his mistake, the two uncorrupted individuals defeat and detonate the Corrupted Gem. Bismuth notes that only a diamond can damage a gem and asks Steven why Rose didn’t stop Pink Diamond. Steven then explains Rose’s identity.

Calming down in the lava (after screaming in it), Bismuth jokes bitterly about his idea to break the Pink Diamond, saying that Rose ended up taking her advice. Steven is impressed by how well Bismuth took it when he tells her that Garnet was not confused about the revelation, much to Bismuth’s dismay when he says that “they’re [her] favorite couple.” Steven calms her down and says that they are back together but they haven’t gotten together yet and explains the concept of the wedding. The two watch as the rest of the Gems prepare, with Ruby working the grill while Sapphire looks on, and Amethyst, Pearl, and Peridot setting up chairs, leading to Peridot knocking over the entire row and Amethyst laughing while Pearl gets upset.

Bismuth decides to introduce herself, but Steven tells her he wants her to be a surprise. He goes outside to propose a toast and yells at Bismuth, which the other gems mistake for a reference to Pearl. She sheepishly agrees before running off and telling the Gems to hold onto their soda cans. He goes to look for Bismuth, who has disappeared. He finds her in her forge making weapons and asks why she refused to come. She tells him that the others could have bullied her, but they didn’t because she tried to break “their leader”, Steven. Steven explains that Garnet is the leader, not him, and she rhetorically asks where Garnet is. She explains that the Crystal Gems stay together despite learning that “it was all a hoax” because Steven is the one she believes in, and claims that the Crystal Gems don’t want her.

Steven convinces her that when they arrive together, they’ll know things are fine between them. Steven returns to the Beach House with Bismuth, and upon seeing her, the Crystal Gems immediately drop their drinks, except for Peridot, who continues by exclaiming that she “won”. Sapphire walks up to the larger gem in disbelief and hugs her. Pearl and Ruby follow suit and tackle Bismuth in glee. Peridot asks for an introduction, but Amethyst tells her to leave them alone. Bismuth makes two rings for Sapphire and Ruby and says that Steven thinks they would be important, which the couple is happy to see.

Details

The title of this episode is based on the phrase “maid of honor”, as well as the line “I am made of love” in the “Jail Break” song “Stronger Than You”.

Both meanings refer to Ruby and Sapphire’s engagement in the previous episode.

This episode reveals the names of four other crystal gems: Tiger’s Eye, Larimar, Serpentine, and Beryl, with Larimar being the Ice Monster from “Monster Buddies”.

Peridot and Bismuth are first shown interacting with Ruby and Sapphire.

Continuity

Bismuth mentions when she tried to break Steven in “Bismuth”; moments before she calls him “Rose” before correcting herself because she tried to, thinking it was her in human disguise.

The Orange Great North Monster from “Gem Hunt” and “Crack the Whip” returns briefly, and Bismuth is revealed to be Biggs Jasper, the former Crystal Gem she mentioned in her own debut episode.

Steven tells Bismuth about Garnet’s breakup over Rose’s secret identity in “Now We’re Only Falling Apart”.

One of the gifts at the register that Steven shows Bismuth is a copy of Elite Meat Beat Mania, which is presumably a homemade copy of Meat Beat Mania, the game Garnet enjoyed in “Arcade Mania”.

Bismuth refers to Ruby and Sapphire as “[her] favorite couple”, as does Steven in “The Question”.

Bismuth now knows about the corrupted gems and that Rose and Pink Diamond were the same person.
