Smiling Friends Season 2 Episode 8

Synopsis

After eating a mysterious artifact found in an ancient burial ground, Pim mysteriously turns green as far as his friends and rivals are concerned. At first, everyone is horrified, but they eventually learn to accept and love “The New Green Pim” in the season 2 finale.

Conspiracy

The episode opens with a zoom in on the Smiling Friends building covered in snow as Allan goes outside to take out the trash. He spots Charlie and Glep building what they call “the worst snowman ever”. Allan says that Snowman looks rotten, which Charlie says is the point of the whole build, before using Rotten as his name. Pim joins the guys outside and asks what they are doing. Pim says that he loves building snowmen and Charlie says that Pim can add to it if he wants. Pim looks through the trash outside the building and finally decides to add a daffodil to the snowman, although it doesn’t exactly fit the theme, but when he adds the daffodil, the snowman screams and comes to life, scaring the main four. They note that Rotten is now alive, to which he asks what life means. Mr. Boss joins them and notes that the daffodil Pim picked grew from the nuclear waste they had. He threatens to kill Rotten, though Pim remarks that they can keep Rotten alive and show him the meaning of life. Mr. Boss flies off to the moon in his brand new rocket boots and Charlie and Allan talk about how funny he is. The others try to make excuses why they can’t join him, so it’s up to Pim to do it himself.

A montage is shown of Pim and Rotten playing in the snow to varying degrees of fun before ending their day relaxing on a bench. Rotten notices a billboard advertising Meep Lite on the beach and says he’d like to go there. Pim comments that he can’t take him there because he would die otherwise, which startles Rotten. He explains that all living things eventually die, but Rotten goes hysterical anyway. The next day, Rotten is shown still crying outside the Smiling Friends headquarters while the others are upset by the noise. Pim says he feels bad because he caused this meltdown. Charlie offers to help and Pim reminds him that his uncle can help pull the strings. The two go outside and introduce Rotten to Bill Nye, who begins to sing a song about death being a natural part of life in his hot air balloon. However, the hot air balloon falls into a power line, instantly killing Bill Nye and undoing any progress the group had made.

At headquarters, Mr. Boss tells the boys that Rotten’s behavior is scaring the customers and if they don’t do something soon, he will take matters into his own hands. Allan suggests that if he takes him to the top of the mountain, he can theoretically live forever. The others remark on his intelligence and Mr. Boss tells them that Allan was the one who designed his rocket boots. The two drag him to the top of the mountain, explaining to Rotten that he’ll never melt this way, though Charlie lets it slip that he can warm up in a million years, so it’s “basically” forever. This doesn’t put Rotten’s mind at ease and makes him scream again. The next day, Yeti arrives at Smiling Friends HQ to drop off Rotten, saying that not only is the mountain his private property, but that he is disturbing his family. Unsure of what to do now, the boys try to come up with ideas, though Glep suggests they put Rotten in the freezer. Rotten is excited about the idea because he will never die this way. However, six months passed and Rotten realized that while he was technically alive, he wasn’t living like he was with Pim. When Charlie heard they were going to the beach, he decided to join them and Pim came up with the perfect plan.

The Smiling Friends and their significant others play beach volleyball, with Rotten stationed in the fridge serving Charlie a beer. He notes that his worries are melting away, though he is promptly knocked over by Homer Simpson’s pet. As he melts, he assures a distraught Pim that it is his time to move on and is happy to have lived life before sinking into the sand. Pim and Charlie mourn Rotten’s death, but turn to see Rotten reincarnated as the ocean. Mr. Boss is shown surfing Rotten’s wave and wishes Pim and Charlie a Merry Christmas (even though it’s June.) He is joined by the ghost of Bill Nye before commenting that he loves science. Charlie goes on to speak about how he loves his friends, God, and his country.

After the speech ends, he and Pim discuss whether Rotten reincarnated only as a wave or as the entire ocean. Rotten swallows the cruise ship before summoning a wave that will likely wash everyone away.
